The original Fanta drink was invented in Germany during World War II, when the ingredients to make Coca-Cola weren’t available. The new drink was made from some of the only ingredients that were available at the time: the sugar from sugar beets, whey (a by-product of cheesemaking), and apple pomace (the skins, pulp, seeds, and stems leftover after making apple juice). The drink was aptly named Fanta after the German word “phantasie,” meaning “imagination.” Today, Fanta is made from a more usual list of ingredients, including cane sugar and various fruity flavorings. This Fanta Lemon is refreshing and fizzy with a citrusy, lemonade-like flavor. The lemon flavor was only briefly available in the US during 2005, but is widely enjoyed throughout Europe where it’s easily found in supermarkets and restaurants. What other flavors of drinks that came to America only briefly as limited edition versions do you miss, or wish you could’ve tried?
