Cassava is a root vegetable extremely similar to potatoes, though it looks like a yam, and has a much thicker skin than both. These delicious Qtela Singkong chips are spicy, but with the hint of a surprise sweetness that is so emblematic of Indonesian food. They’re as thin as potato chips but much crunchier, and because they’re made of cassava, they don’t absorb any oil or get soggy like many other chips—in our opinion, that almost makes this a balanced meal! They’re Balado-flavored; Balado is a West-Sumatran type of Bumbu, or seasoning, made of chilis, tomatoes, and other aromatics. You’d use it to flavor vegetables, stews, and meats; or, in our case, these delightfully crunchy and light cassava chips!
