This lemon cream cheesecake comes individually packaged and features a tart lemon cream filling. Though cheesecake is not a Turkish, or even Middle Eastern, invention, there are many Turkish desserts that feature cheese. Künefe, for example, is a popular dessert featuring a stretchy Turkish cheese called hatay that’s layered with semolina dough, crushed pistachios, and a sweet lemony syrup. Peynir helvasi, or cheese halva, is a Turkish dessert made from stretchy Turkish cheese, semolina, milk, butter, sugar, flour, and egg yolk. There are even savory versions of cheesecake, made using a cheese called beyaz peynir, that is somewhat similar to Greek feta cheese. So, while cheesecake itself isn’t particularly Turkish, it’s easy to see how this creamy lemony dessert has become a popular treat in Türkiye and beyond.
